Again, the lyrics come into play here – they are totally competent with no clunks but there’s just that lack of something really heart tugging – something more personal. This, “Perdida” and “Fare Thee Well” all have good melodies and singing but are missing the things that would put them over the top. “You Found Yourself While Losing Your Heart” is such 70’s soft rock radio to me and I like it for that reason. The melody and singing are good but it’s strings are too sympathetic – they just sit there sad without any other emotions weaving in and out. This one also never really has a peak moment or a highlight – it softly and slowly carries itself along the dusty roads of Mexico with no peaks or valleys. I can’t see most “Plush” fans waltzing to this. “Perdida” has mini-touches of Latin influence and is like a torch-lit ballad sung by Gutt as if it were traditional pop. I’m actually not too impressed with the title track either. They also use some retro instruments which I do like as an idea but it’s not always successful. Still, there’s a pretty melody here and it’s solid overall as a composition. Dean’s slide guitar solo sounds like George Harrison reincarnated but it’s the version of Hari in the late 70’s when he was safe, snug and settled in comforting soft pop that had no edge nor challenge. He croons well on the opener and single “Fare Thee Well”, with some nice falsetto moments but it’s actually the backing that’s bland on this. I’m not implying it’s all Jeff Gutt’s fault either. The albums that were more unpredictable, had more character, had more of that ‘it’ factor. I can claim this album is above average but I can’t really claim it’s better than their normal albums. The only issue is similar to the last album. So did it fare (thee) well? Mostly, yes, they can keep their reputation for making great soft rock as a lot of beautiful vibes are on this. Despite liking so much soft material from them, I didn’t want it necessarily forced on me for a whole album. STP is an automatic purchase for me so of course I took the plunge. I just had to get used to the fact that Weiland was gone, then I had to get used to a new singer, and now I was promised zero rock from a rock band. The songwriting really had to be good to now not have Scott Weiland or their signature sound. A surprise I still don’t know I agree with, the songs had to be up to par for such a task to be accomplished especially considering their fanbase was still split about them continuing at all under the name. The next Under The Southern Stars is in Melbourne Wednesday on the Tennis Centre precinct.STP have taken turns towards softer material but never have they dedicated an entire album to it. Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart (from Tiny Music, 1996) Roll Me Under (from Stone Temple Pilots, 2018) Stone Temple Pilots setlist, Hastings, 12 March 2022 We want to please the people coming to the show and that definitely consists of “must plays”.” Our set is limited to an hour and when you have to appeal to people you don’t want them leaving thinking “oh they didn’t play this or that”. You are going to be getting a lot of music. “You have the great Cheap Trick, Bush, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. “This is going to be a short set for it band,” says Dean. The Under The Southern Stars setlist has been modified for the Under The Southern Stars audience. This is just our silly little band and I just want to see us getting back to enjoying life again”. We definitely had a lot of shows under our belt. We toured Europe and we toured the States and Canada multiple times.

Since Gutt joined the band, STP have been active more than in their hey day. Lead singer Jeff Gutt joined the band after the death of Scott Weiland. Stone Temple Pilots is the original members brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass) and drummer Eric Kretz. Some have been hit harder than others and I am glad to see things are moving in a much better direction for us all”. “My goodness, it has been quite a few years.

“I’m more excited for us as a human race globally to get back to where work should be,” Dean tells Noise11. Stone Temple Pilots are back in Australia for Under The Southern Stars touring globally again for the first time since the pandemic began. STP’s Dean DeLeo tells, “well, its amazing what a few heroin busts will limit you too.” Stone Temple Pilots only ever toured Australia once before.
